[TRANS] 100303 SME Vs Mnet, The Accumulated Age-Old Conflict Spills Over… Why?

The sixteen-month-long conflict between SM Entertainment, one of Korea’s biggest entertainment agencies, and Mnet Media, K-pop’s leading company, has finally revealed itself to the public.

On the 2nd, SM Entertainment, that has produced popular singers such as Girls Generation, f(x), SHINee, Super Junior, BoA, Kangta, TVXQ and Trax, announced on its official website that it would no longer be providing Mnet Media with the possession to music files by SM Entertainment.

Following this, netizens could no longer listen to Girls Generation’s ‘Oh!’ on Mnet.com, a famous domestic music portal site run by Mnet Media.

SME revealed that while it was contemplating renewing their music provision contract with Mnet Media, the agency learned that Mnet Media had breached their contract and decided to withdraw the possession to SM’s music files from the company.

SME stated, “We confirmed that Mnet.com and Mnet Media had been using SM content without authorization on their ASP sites.” and “Although this was a breach in the contract, Mnet Media did not notify SME of such an act. Therefore, SME has decided to end Mnet Media’s ability to use SM content.”

On the 3rd, it was found that when SM agency singers’ songs were clicked on in Mnet.com, you can no longer listen to the song with a notice popping up stating “This song is in the process of being discussed for a contract renewal” and “We will work hard to bring the service back as soon as possible.”

SME and Mnet Media have had conflicts in the past as well. However, neither side publicly denied nor confirmed that there was a conflict between the two firms. However, the majority of K-pop and broadcasting representatives stated that there had been conflicts between SM and Mnet Media since sixteen months before this current situation.

Not a single SME agency singer has appeared on Mnet Media’s K-pop program ‘M! Countdown’ since November of 2008. Considering the fact that only the singers with the most popular songs were to appear on such music programs, especially at the end of the year, this situation raises numerous questions. SME agency groups Girls Generation, Supper Junior and f(x) had many hit songs last year.

This is not all. SM Entertainment singers (excluding TVXQ’s Xiah Junsu, YoungWoong Jaejoong and Micky Yoochun) have not been appearing on other Mnet programs or awards shows either.

There are many who believe that the conflict started after the ‘MKMF’ awards in November of 2008 because of the results of the awards show.

Mnet Media’s ‘MAMA’ last November, the follow up awards show of ‘MKMF’, is also said to have deepened the conflict between SME and Mnet Media.

This was because Xiah Junsu, YoungWoong Jaejoong, and Micky Yoochun, three members of TVXQ who have been locked in a dispute with SME over their contract since July last year, appeared on ‘MAMA’ and received the ‘Asia’s Best Star’ award as TVXQ. It was obvious that the fact that these three had received an award on behalf of TVXQ and that Mnet Media had invited them to participate in the first place did not sit well with SM Entertainment.

At the time, SM Entertainment expressed its inability to understand Mnet’s actions by saying, “If the company was trying to give an award to TVXQ, it should have contacted SME.” and “We cannot accept the fact that they called only the three to come and receive an award meant for TVXQ.”

To this, Mnet retaliated and said, “We invited all five members to come receive the award for TVXQ.” and “We let the other two members choose whether to participate or not.” The firm continued to say, “The three members were probably thinking about the dispute when they were deciding to come or not. But if we don’t call the three people who came to receive the award TVXQ, then what are we supposed to call them?”

However, SME agency singers’ songs were still available on Mnet after the show. Therefore, the three members’ participation in the awards show took on the appearance of a short spat between the two firms. However, many representatives say that the conflict between the two firms kept deepening as time passed.

SME and Mnet has finally publicly shown their conflict through this current situation, starting with SME’s official statement regarding the issue.

SM Entertainment and Mnet Media are two of the biggest firms in the business. Many are curious as to how this whole event will turn out.

[TRANS] The Unfortunate Story Behind Mnet and SMEnt

Last night’s MAMA, hosted by Mnet, was certainly a feast for numerous Kpop fans out there. However, as enjoyable as it was, the event was (and still is) swamped with layers of controversy, with SM Entertainment’s boycott being the eye of the storm. Mnet and SME appear to be mortal enemies, but many still remember the fact that they used to be very friendly with each other. Exactly what made them become such bitter adversaries? Let’s examine the dispute between Mnet and SME.

What exactly is Mnet?

Mnet is a media company owned by CJ Media which focuses on music, media, entertainment and web content business. CJ Media is a part of CJ, a South Korean conglomerate that is one of the top five largest companies in the country. Mnet is involved in pretty much every aspect of the entertainment industry, ranging from album production, distribution, sales, management, television broadcasting, online media and many other businesses. With these expansion, Mnet has become a giant in music industry, with market share of 44% in album sales and over 20% in online music sales.

Mnet and CJ are also shareholders in major entertainment companies DSP Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Although they own no more than 20% of shares from each company, the fact that CJ is a conglomerate means the aforementioned companies are now affiliates of CJ. Smaller entertainment companies with famous names such as Shinwha, Kim Dong Ryul and Wheesung are “affiliates” of CJ as well. Similarly, 30% of JYP Entertainment is held by SK, another conglomerate that is one of top 5 largest companies in Korea, making JYP a faction with as much support as Mnet has.

How has SME and Mnet’s relationship developed over the years?

Before 2008, SME and Mnet were quite friendly. MKMF, now known as MAMA, featured numerous artists from SME which were given many awards. However, during 2008, Mnet proposed to SME that they would like to be the distributor of music produced by SME; in return, Mnet would receive certain percentage of profit from the sales. Mnet had already been distributing music of JYP, DSP and YG, and with the right to distribute SME’s music they would become undisputed leader in the industry. SME refused the offer as they had the ability to distribute their own music and did not feel the need to pay Mnet for a job that they could do themselves. Mnet undoubtedly held a grudge against SME for obstructing their dominance of the industry, and the friendship ended there.

CJ has also attempted hostile takeover of SME but failed. If they had been successful, CJ would have acquired control of Korean entertainment industry. These facts have not been well-publicized, until recent controversy involving SME and MAMA have brought the public’s attention to the relationship between the two parties. With SNSD’s Gee and MAMA, we have now witnessed the nature of their relationship.

How does MAMA play into this tense relationship between SME and Mnet?

One of the biggest controversies brought on by MAMA was the fact that the three members of TVXQ, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu, made their appearance for acceptance of Best Representative of Asia Award. Although some may argue that SME’s outrage was uncalled for, and that the trio is free to do whatever they want, the choice to make an appearance at an Mnet event was deliberate and could not have been a spontaneous, wanton decision.

So what’s the significance behind TVXQ’s appearance?

Many have suspected that the three members were able to act in such bold manner against SME in recent months because they were being supported by an organization more powerful than SME. With their unabashed appearance at MAMA, it now appears that Mnet and CJ might be the ones that have the three members’ back. It is very possible that CJ and Mnet are backing the three members in order to win their fight against SME for dominance in the industry. If that is so, then TVXQ members have become mere pawns in a battle between two corporations.

SME, a company now known for its oppressive, big-corporate attitude towards its artists, is ironically under attack from one of the largest corporations in Korea. Both companies are profit-motivated organizations that are pursuing whatever action that generates more profit, so there is no good or bad in a situation like this. What is unfortunate, however, is that the artists have become the victims in this corporate power struggle. TVXQ, SNSD, and SHINee are all victims in this dispute between SME and CJ/Mnet; MAMA could merely have been the beginning of penance for these artists.

[TRANS] 091121 United TVXQ Fans Shout ‘TVXQ!’

Mnet’s ‘2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)’ vowed to become a music festival of Asia and started off with a bang.

MAMA was held at the Jamshil Indoor Gymnasium at 7 pm on the 21st. This event was broadcasted through Mnet and KMTV in, not only Korea, but the ten major Asian nations Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Macao, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Three members of TVXQ, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu, and YoungWoong Jaejoong, who are caught in a legal dispute with their agency SM Entertainment, did not follow the footsteps of the agency and instead announced their attendance of the awards ceremony and many are curious of the future of TVXQ.

The TVXQ fans who were on location sang a TVXQ song together as the commercials were playing at the end of Act 1 to show their love for TVXQ. They also waved their red balloons and shouted “TVXQ” to show their belief that TVXQ would last forever.
